Tyrone Loses to Ligonier: Slowly Improving Along the Way

Last Friday night, the Tyrone girls and boys swim team took on Ligonier Valley at home. Everyone worked their hardest, but both teams lost to Ligonier. The girls lost with a final score of 66-104, while the boys lost 55-109.

On the boys side, Blake Slobodnik was a double winner.

“I think we swam well,” Coach Tom Getz said after the meet. “We had times drop and some good swims.”

Tyrone vs Ligonier Valley 12-18-15

Girls: Tyrone- 66, Ligonier- 104

The Tyrone relay of Emily Beam, Abby Luensmann, Gwen Dougherty and Allison Hosko won two second places for the team. The relay swam in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Beam was the only first place for the girls, winning in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:10.20.

Other second places went to Emma Hoover, Beam, Luensmann, and Madison Branstetter.

“I think we all swam well,” said Luensmann, “and improved our times. Ligonier Valley is a tough team.”

Luensmann’s time in 100 free improved by five seconds from the first meet. Branstetter’s time improved by five seconds in the 500 free from the second meet.

“We had had good swims from the girls,” said Getz. “Swimmers are stepping up and doing new strokes so that’s always good to see.”

Boys: Tyrone- 55, Ligonier- 109

A Tyrone boys relay made up of Sergio Slobodnik, B. Slobodnik, Collin Rhoades and Austin Quinn earned second in the 200 medley relay.Due to illness, Bryce Bauer replaced Quinn as anchor in the 400 free relay and the team took another second.

B. Slobodnik got two first places, one in the 200 free (2:08.11) and one in the 500 free (6:00.05). S. Slobodnik earned a first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.59.

Bauer got a second in the 100 freestyle. Rhoades earned two seconds. He placed in the 200 free and the 100 breast.

“We did alright,” said Rhoades about the boys meet. “We don’t really need to improve. We really just need more numbers to win meets. It didn’t help that two boys and girls weren’t [at the meet] because of sickness.”

Matthew Beam dropped six seconds off his time in the 500 free. S. Slobodnik improved by three seconds in his 100 breaststroke.

“We need to work on the small things, such as starts and turns, for now,” said Getz.

The Tyrone swimmers will have a break from meets over this holiday season. The first meet back from break will be Monday January 4th at Central Cambria. The team hopes to improve and take the win.
