In a key Mountain League victory, the Tyrone Lady Eagles beat the Penns Valley Lady Rams 64-45 last night at home.
It was the Lady Eagle’s sixth win in a row, improving their record to 8-4 and earning them a share of first place in the Mountain League.
For the second time this season, Sophomore Kasey Engle came close to breaking the school record for points in a single game with 38.
“I started off slow, but I’m so thankful for how my teammates picked me up,” said Engle.
Tyrone ended the first quarter with only 13 points. However, the game picked up in the second quarter with both Christine and Engle working hard on offense and defense. Engle had two steals and a rebound, while Christine had a steal that set Engle up for two more.
Unfortunately that tough play wasn’t able to stop Penns Valley from coming back and Tyrone ended the half with a narrow 25-22 lead.
The third quarter included much physical play as Alexis Cannistraci and Lindsey Kemp both found themselves in foul trouble, but Engle responded with 13 points in the third including three vital 3-pointers that put Tyrone up 42-33 at the end of the period.
Tyrone added 22 points in the fourth quarter, and went on to win it by a comfortable margin.
The win put Tyrone at a tie with Penns Valley for first place.
“This was such an intense and exciting game and I was thrilled our team could come out with the win,” said Engle.
Engle’s career high 38 points were 2 points shy of the school record set by Nicole DelBaggio in 1998. Engle’s previous game high was 36.
Christine was the second leading scorer for Tyrone with 14 points.
Tyrone Lady Eagles are back in action Thursday at 7:30 against Claysburg-Kimmel at Tyrone.
