Tyrone Golf Team Just One Stroke Back in Operation Our Town Tournament
The Tyrone Golf team tied for second at the annual Operation Our Town Tournament at Park Hills Country Club, just one stroke back of first place State College.
A total of 39 teams from 25 school districts participated in the four-person scramble tournament to support the cause.
“Operation Our Town is a great tournament for the kids and a great organization as a whole,” said Tyrone Head Golf Coach Mike Funicelli, “Yes, it would have been great to win, but supporting the tournament and their initiative is much more important than that.”
The Tyrone team consisted of Williamsburg junior R.J. Royer and Tyrone seniors Cassidy Miksich, Cyrus Ahlert, and Braeton Miles.
“It was a fun tournament to play in,” said Alhert, “Not only was it a nice course, but it was for a great cause. This was one of my favorite moments this past year, and it also gave us some practice for the playoffs.”
The first few holes started hot for Tyrone with six birdies before turning to the front.
Tyrone had just one eagle on the day, resulting from a massive tee shot by R.J. Royer on the par-4 eighth hole that put Tyrone on the green, leaving a long 30+ foot putt for the eagle.
After two missed attempts, senior Braeton Miles sunk the long putt to give Tyrone their first big hole.
“The tournament was a great experience. As a new golfer, it was really great to be a part of it. Being able to play with friends and support a cause that is really great in supporting an epidemic that’s around us is very amazing,” said Miles.
Tyrone’s 11-under par 59 was just one shot off the 58 made by State College, who won the tournament and took home a $2,500 grant to be used for a school program or designated to a charity of the school’s choice that is aimed at the education and prevention of drug use.
Penn Cambria won the girl’s tournament with a 68.
Funicelli was happy with his team’s performance and was thankful to Operation Our Town for sponsoring it again this year.
“Shout out to Shawna Hoover who spends hours organizing the event and making it great for the kids,” said Funicelli.
