Tyrone Golf Falls to Hollidaysburg
Tyrone was upset by Hollidaysburg at their home match at Sinking Valley Country Club this Tuesday.
The team had a rough outing due to their high scores and difficult weather conditions. A few of Tyrone’s golfers were possibly a bit “too confident” going into Tuesday’s match causing them to score what they would least expect to.
“The greens seemed very inconsistent. At the start of the match, the greens were fast. Once we got to the end, they seemed to slow down a lot,” said Tyrone junior Maverick Fleck.
The weather conditions were not ideal for the match. It was raining off and on and had some high winds throughout the day causing the ball to fly all over the place. Some players opted to use irons off the tee to not get as much height on the ball, causing it to fly further and straighter.
Williamsburg junior RJ Royer carded a nice 76, his best score so far this year. Royer started even par through the front 9 with a 36, and 4-over par (40) on the back.
Tyrone Head Coach Mike Funicelli was very disappointed after dropping to second in the Mountain League.
“It sucked losing to Hollidaysburg. Cassidy and RJ had some impressive scores. To head into playoffs, we need to be playing better golf,” said Funicelli.
Tyrone senior Cassidy Miksich carded a strong 78 on her run at Sinking Valley. Miksich started off 1-over par (37) after the front 9. She was 1-under going into hole number 8, one of the short par 3s. Miksich ended holes 8 & 9 1-over after two bogeys, putting her at an impressive score of 37. She later went on to score 5-over par (41) on the back 9.
Hollidaysburg’s fourth best golfer shot an 83. A score that Tyrone just could not keep up with. Tyrone took the loss to Hollidaysburg (344-324).
The current standings for the Mountain League are as follows: Hollidaysburg (20-1); Tyrone (19-2); Huntingdon and Philipsburg-Osceola (13-8); Bellefonte (10-11); Clearfield (6-15); and Bald Eagle Area (3-18).
Tyrone’s next match is next Thursday, September 8th at Mountain View Country Club.
