GOLDEN Again! Tyrone Girls Win Back-to-Back District Titles

Tyrone will send 5 girls to the state meet in Shippensburg. The boys placed sixth overall.

The Tyrone Lady Eagles came out on top once again at the District 6 AA track and field championship meet last night, edging out second-place Central Cambria by 5 points to claim back-to-back district titles.

“This is the most mentally tough group of kids I have ever coached, “ said Tyrone Head Coach Brad Kanuch. “There was a lot of adversity yesterday that we saw as coaches that is hard to see from outsiders. Their mental toughness was able to get them through and move forward. This season was not easy for the girls by any means.”

The girls competed at districts with one of the smallest teams in the field, only taking 11 girls. But each member of the team contributed, finishing with 91 points as a team.

“I think as a team we had silent confidence,” said Kanuch, “I told the girls early in the week that everyone just needed to go out and run their race. And we left it at that. It is exactly what happened.”

Senior Mackenzie Latchford earned 1st in the long jump with a jump of 16-6.5.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment, and I was so surprised that I came back better than ever,” Latchford told the Altoona Mirror. “The long jump was one of the last events I was able to get back to because that’s the event where I pulled my quad.”

Tyrone’s other individual first-place winner was sophomore Rebecca Lewis, who earned 1st in the 400 with a time of 1:00.61, beating Sara McConnell of River Valley by less than .4 of a second.

“I saw her in the corner of my eye and just kept going,” Lewis told the Mirror, “I wanted to get either first or second, and I remember thinking I was going to regret it when it was over if I didn’t keep the lead. It feels great to be a district champion.”

The girls 4×100 relay team of Eva Toth, Mackenzie Latchford, Natalie Saltsgiver, and Reagan Irons also finished first and are headed to States at Shippensburg.

In addition to her first in the long jump, Latchford also earned 3rd in the 100 with a time of 12.81 and 2nd in the 200 with a time of 26.52.

Irons earned 2nd in the high jump with a 5-2, and Saltsgiver earned 3rd with a jump of 5-0.

Irons also earned 2nd in the long jump behind Latchford with a 16-2.

Saltsgiver earned 2nd in the triple jump with a jump of 34-3.5.

All the performances listed above qualified for the state meet and will compete at Shippensburg University on May 27th and 28th.

I wanted to get either first or second, and I remember thinking I was going to regret it when it was over if I didn’t keep the lead. It feels great to be a district champion.

— Rebecca Lewis

The girls team also had several other finishes in the top 8 which helped to earn valuable points toward the district title.

Eliza Vance earned 6th in the 400 with a 1:03.36. Saltsgiver earned 4th in the long jump with a 15-7.5. Irons earned 4th in the long jump with a jump of 33-10. Rayann Walls also earned 6th in the discus with a throw of 95-8.

In addition, the girls 4×4 team of Eliza Vance, Stephanie Ramsey, Avalyn Moore, and Rebecca Lewis earned 7th.

On the boys side, Tyrone finished 6th as a team with 34 points.

The boys unfortunately do not have any athletes continuing on to states, but many had very successful days and placed within the top 8.

AJ Detwiler earned 4th in the 800 with a 2:02.29, finishing just .06 seconds behind the 3rd place finisher, just missing a trip to States.

“Adam Detwiler and the boys 4×800 missed making states by a minimal amount,” said Kanuch, “It is hard when a relay comes down to a second and an individual event comes down to .06.”

Deegan Bauldaf earned 8th in the 100 with an 11.76.

Kolten Miller earned 7th in the 400 with a time of 53.5.

Colton Fink earned 4th in the mile with a time of 4:48.86.

Justin Jackson earned 5th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.58.

In the long jump, Brady Ronan earned 6th with a 19-9.75, and Andrew Weaver earned 7th with a 19-6.5.

This is the first group I have been able to see from freshman to seniors. I am so proud of the boys and girls who have been part of this team during that time frame.

— Head Coach Brad Kanuch

Weaver also earned 5th in the triple jump with a jump of 41-0.25.

In the relays, the 4×8 team of Rory Quigley, Colton Fink, Aden Detwiler, and AJ Detwiler earned 4th with a time of 8:33.85.

The 4×4 team of Brady Ronan, Rocky Romani, AJ Detwiler, and Colton Miller finished 6th with a time of 3:41.43.

Overall Kanush was very pleased with his team’s results and is looking forward to building on their success in the future.

“This is the first group I have been able to see from freshman to seniors. I am so proud of the boys and girls who have been part of this team during that time frame. You all have helped build our team’s successes and will hopefully help our future success,” said Kanuch.
