Zane’s 20 inch brown trout caught in Schell Run

On April 30, 2016 we set off for another weekend of fishing. We visited two spots,  Hitchens Creek and Schell Run.

Hitchens Creek is along Hoover’s Lane, right underneath the bridge on Dogwood Road. This creek is narrow and shallow, with only one or two good holes. Schell Run goes from Quest Haven down towards the creek at Tyrone Area School District. Quest Haven is the upper part. This hole is big enough for two or three people. With experience, any more people than that can cause a snagging hazard. Zane refers to the creek by the school as the “secret hole.” At this spot, the whole is a little harder to fish in. There is a certain spot where leaves are caught instead of fish.

At Hitchens, Jaylon caught five and Zane caught one. At the second stop, at the lower part of Schell Run, Zane caught three. The biggest of his was fifteen inches. Jaylon caught three about twelve inches or less. The third stop, at the top of Schell Run, was where Zane caught the fish of the day. It was a twenty inch brown trout.

This twenty inch brown trout had quite the story behind it. With Zane’s first cast, he caught it and it broke his line. On the second try, he succeeded with a fight of landing it. We tried many different types of baits such as wax worms, bread, and spinners. As we assumed, wax worms worked the best.
