The 2-0 Golden Eagle football team hosts the 1-1 Huntingdon Bearcats this Friday night at Gray Field. Both teams come off close victories in the previous week.

Tyrone trumped the returning District 6 champs 20-13 last week in Central. A huge win for Tyrone, the team hopes to roll with the momentum and defeat Huntingdon.

Thanks to a couple of key turnovers, the Huntingdon Bearcats hung on for a 28-20 victory against Bellefonte last week.  Bellefonte’s program has gone nearly two years without a win.

“We know that Huntingdon isn’t very good,” said senior linebacker Jake Makdad. “There is no doubt that we should win this game. However, we can’t go into this week thinking that.  We need to bring our best game.”

Tyrone is set to have a great season after winning perhaps their two biggest games of the regular season.

So far, Tyrone’s running game is sound.  Running back Aleic Hunter is currently ranked 6th in AA rushing yards in the state.

However, the airborne attack has struggled so far.

In the wins against Central and Bellwood, senior quarterback Garrett Hunter threw 35 passes, completing 15.

While the running game has generated 403 yards, the passing game has netted only 190 yards.

“We’ve always been a run-heavy football program,” explained Head Coach Jason Wilson.  “But obviously our passing game needs some work. Hopefully this week we will be able to fine-tune some of our plays and get everything a little closer to perfect.”

The fact of the matter is, Tyrone’s passing game has the potential.

Quarterback Garrett Hunter has a rocket for an arm.  He can throw the ball as well as anyone on the schedule. The top four receivers from last year’s team have all returned. The offensive line usually has good pass protection, but a late blitz or missed assignment sometimes gets through.

It seems as if Tyrone is always just a step, a second, a yard away from making the big play in the air.

The Eagles just need a little work to finally start making connections before they are running, or in this case, passing, on all cylinders.

Look for them to do it this week versus Huntingdon.
