TASD to Provide Free Student Meals on Virtual Days

With the Tyrone Area Middle and High School on a virtual schedule and Tyrone Elementary School on a hybrid schedule, the Tyrone Area School District and The Nutrition Group will again provide take home meals for students in need.

Any Tyrone School District student is eligible to receive food during any virtual learning days in the upcoming weeks.

Meal distribution will be at the Tyrone Elementary School. It will not be daily, as it was in the summer, but is scheduled for the next two Wednesdays (12/2 & 12/9) and Fridays (12/4 & 12/11)  from 2-3 pm.

“In the event of a closure without much notice we will do our best to provide meals for students to take home or provide an opportunity for meal pick up,” said TASD Food Service Director Amanda Owens in an email to TASD staff.

An RSVP for pickup is not required, however, it is highly suggested. Parents should complete this Google Form no later than 3 pm the day before meal pick up.

“The last thing we want is to run out and have to ask them to come back. If a parent signs their student up we will work with the office to get the meal bag to the student for dismissal,” said Owens.

Lunches include sandwiches, fresh vegetables, fruit, and milk. Cereal and other assorted breakfast items, along with a fruit/juice and milk will be provided for breakfast.

The meal bags will include breakfast and lunch for 2 – 7 days depending on the schedule. All meal bags will provide enough food to feed the student until the next meal distribution day.

If a parent is unable to pick up during the 2-3 pm window, arrangements can be made for them to pick up meals at a different time.

The meal distribution schedule can also be found on the Tyrone School District website under food services.

In addition, the elementary cafeteria will be open every day that students are in the building. The middle school cafeteria is currently closed. The high school cafeteria will be open with limited options for breakfast (7:30 – 8:05 AM) and lunch (11:15 – 11:55 AM). Adults working in the district can also purchase adult meals at either location.

Parents with questions or those who need to make arrangements to pick up meals at a different time should contact Tyrone Food Service Director Amanda Owens at 684-4240 ext 3727.
