Six Tyrone golfers competed in sectionals hosted at Ebensburg Country Club last Wednesday, and two were good enough to qualify for districts: senior Kaleb Sweitzer and his brother, freshman Blake Sweitzer.
Blake Sweitzer topped the scorecard for the Eagles with an 81, placing 14th; his brother Kaleb shot the second-highest for Tyrone with an 83, finishing in 22nd place.
The top 30 golfers qualified for districts.
The Eagles were somewhat familiar with the course since they had played it a few times prior, but Ebensburg has always been a tough course for Tyrone, according to Head Coach Mike Funicelli.
“The wet course conditions and the slow greens made it tough to hit different kinds of shots; you kind of just had to go straight at the pin,” freshman Blake Sweitzer said.
The brothers will compete in districts against players from across the region tomorrow at Sinking Valley Country Club.
In addition to the Sweitzer brothers, Tyrone’s Caleb Miller and Will Lower, and Ty Uplinger from Williamsburg represented the Golden Eagles at sectionals.
These Tyrone players did not make the cut from day one. Miller finished tied for 32nd with a 90, Preston Long and Will Lower tied for 34th with a 92, and Ty Uplinger was 35th with a 93.
As a team, Tyrone placed eighth out of the 15 teams. Unfortunately, Tyrone did not make the team districts cut and was eliminated.
The Sweitzer brothers hope to do well at districts for a chance to represent Tyrone in the state tournament.
To move on to the state tournament, they will need to place top seven at districts.
The fact that the district match is held at Sinking Valley Country Club, the Eagles’ home course, is an advantage for Tyrone’s brotherly duo, and they hope to capitalize on it and make a run at states.
“I am confident that Blake and I will show up and prove ourselves amongst the other players,” senior Kaleb Sweitzer said.
