Should smartphone use be restricted in schools?

Students argue each and everyday about the “no cell phone policy” in our school district. Some students agree that cell phones should remain off and located in the locker during school hours.  Other students think there should be exceptions made.

Cell phones can be more helpful then what the people think. A cell phone has internet, and that can be used for school purposes. Our school computers are slow, and it takes forever to get even logged on. Then there’s the cell phone where you turn it on, and can be on the internet in seconds.

Some teachers and administrators will argue, and explain the risks there are to using a cell phone in school districts.

“Cell phones can be a big risk. Pictures are being taken without permission, and some students are using the cell phone for the wrong reasons. If we allow the cell phones to be used in the school district there are many precautions, and its just to much to worry about,” said a current World Cultures teacher Mrs. Redinger.

Students will also argue, and explain the advantages there are to using a cell phone in school districts. Some students after filling out the BYOD form can use their cell phone in class if the teacher allows it, which very few do. Unlike freshman who have chrome books all of the other grades are left out of this use of technology in class.

“I think using a cell phone in class would be very beneficial, because we could use it to help with projects or just to simply look up a word that we don’t know. Also, some students focus a lot better on their school work when listening to music, because it helps them focus,” said current junior Jordan Wolfe.

So the question is, would students really use their cell phones for the right reasons if given the opportunity?
