There have been a few changes to the Tyrone junior-senior prom this year, including new advisors and a new venue.

The prom committee’s two new advisors are study hall teacher Gabby McLarren and math teacher Chelsey Markel. The advisors and prom committee have been dedicating a lot of  time to make sure everything runs smoothly on this special night.

I am excited to be a Prom advisor this year with Miss Markel. Being creative, I especially liked working on the centerpieces and decorations. Even though we are both new this year I hope we are able to put together an enjoyable event.”

The theme this year is “Old Hollywood.”

“I am excited to be a prom advisor this year with Miss Markel. Being creative, I especially liked working on the centerpieces and decorations. Even though we are both new this year I hope we are able to put together an enjoyable event,” said McLarren.

The biggest change this year is a new location.

The 2019 TAHS prom will be held at The Grand Hotel in Altoona on Friday, May 17 from 7-11 pm.

For a number of years the prom has been held at the Discovery Center in downtown Altoona, but due to Penn State purchasing the building, the prom committee was unable to rent it this year.

After considering their options, the advisors and committee decided to book the Altoona Grand Hotel.  They are working hard on decorations and are confident that the new location will look good for the event.

Families and friends can view the decorations before the prom from 6:30 p.m. – 6:45 p.m on prom day. To see a few photos of the new venue, click the gallery above.

One big advantage to the Grand Hotel over the Discovery Center is the large parking lot. This is beneficial because families, friends and prom goers will not have to walk far or have trouble finding parking. The Discovery Center had very little parking and some people had to walk a few blocks to get to the building.

A driveway also goes through the parking lot and wraps around the building. This is exciting because the prom committee was able to keep the Grand March, which many people thought would not be happening.

The Grand March will take place outside the Altoona Grand Hotel starting at 6:45 p.m.
