Opinion: Homecoming should incorporate grades 9-12
Homecoming is only five weeks away and much of the student body still does not know who is in charge and how it will be run.
Whoever is running homecoming this year we have a few suggestions:
Ever since the 2012-13 school year only the seniors have been eligible to be on the homecoming court. However prior to 2012 the homecoming committee selected girls from all high school grades for the homecoming court.
We feel that it’s wrong that the underclassmen are no longer recognized. A girl from each sport and/or club gets chosen to represent that certain group or activity. We think this would be a great experience for the underclassmen because they might be not able to receive the nomination when they’re a senior. These 20 clubs and sports consist of basketball, softball, cheerleading, cross country, soccer, HOSA, FBLA, YAN, student council, concert choir, POP’s Extension, majorettes, color guard, tennis, swimming, marching band, jazz band, volleyball, national honors society, and FFA.
And who will be running the homecoming committee this school year? Last year and the year before Mrs. Martin ran the homecoming committee, usually a teacher or staff member of the high school will take it over but no one has taken control or volunteered to run it. By including the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors it gives them an opportunity to shine because they might not be able to get that chance as a senior.
Instead of this system we feel there needs to be a nominee from each grade 9th-12th from all the activities and clubs. There is always enough time to recognize all these girls.
