October, a time of skeletons and pumpkin spice. The leaves begin to fall, and the weather begins to change. It’s an exciting, spooky month.

It’s a time for people to dress up and be whatever they want, give themselves a little scare, and decorate their homes with ghosts and goblins. But, don’t forget about the huge amount of candy they eat during Halloween. In fact, October 30th is National Candy Corn Day.

I have loved candy corn for as long as I can remember. It’s the perfect amount of sweet, and it is nice to decorate with too. It looks very festive sitting in a candy dish on the table. However, after making a twitter poll recently, I have learned that a lot of people hate candy corn.

Out of 37 people, 54 percent said that they hate candy corn.

“It is the most disgusting, overhyped, and unrightfully loved candy that there has ever been. Really, it should just be landfill,” said senior, Brandon Escala.

Although the poll was almost evenly split with “love it” having 46 percent, I’m very surprised with the results. I really thought candy corn was popular. I see it everywhere around this time of year.

National Candy Corn Day is not an official holiday or day, but it gets recognized by many people around the world. Along with Hershey’s and Snicker’s bars, candy corn makes the Top Ten list of the most popular Halloween candies every year. It is actually very easy to make as well. All it takes is sugar, fondant, marshmallow crème, food coloring, vanilla and corn-starch.

According to the National Confectioners Association, more than 35 million pounds (or 9 billion pieces) of candy corn will be produced this year. It is known to be one of the “healthier” candies for you because it is fat-free. It contains roughly 28 grams of sugar and only 140 calories per handful.

So, if you love candy corn as much as I do, join me in celebrating a day devoted to this delicious candy.
