Drake released his eighth studio album “For All The Dogs” on October 6th. This album was hit or miss, with some of the tracks being inconsistent and not delivering peak Drake quality in every song.
Some tracks could have been removed to make the album hit after hit and an all-out stronger album.
On the Billboard Hot 100, every single song off of the album is within the Top 50, alongside it selling 402k copies within the first week of its release. The number one song right now is “First Person Shooter (Ft. J. Cole)”. This is J. Cole’s first number-one song ever despite his massive popularity, with multiple of his singles getting millions of streams.
There are some very good listens on this album, such as “Virginia Beach”, “8AM in Charlotte”, “First Person Shooter (Ft. J. Cole)”, and “7969 Santa”.Teezo Touchdown’s performance on “7696 Santa” is immaculate and has started bringing him more attention.
For the first time, Drake had his six-year-old son, Adinos, rap a verse in the song “Daylight”, which makes me hopeful for the future of music knowing that his son may follow in his footsteps to become the next big rapper.
Some of the tracks do drag this project down, however. “Polar Opposites”, “Away From Home”, and “BBL Love (Interlude)” are not some of Drake’s best work, in my opinion. These songs have sloppy production put into them and are, rightfully, some of the less streamed songs on the album.
The best song on “For All the Dogs”, by far, is “Virginia Beach”– there are so many elements in this song that make it such a masterpiece. This song is the first track of the album and sets the expectation high for the rest of the listen. Within the song is a sample from Frank Ocean’s “Wiseman”, an unreleased song that was originally supposed to be in the movie Django Unchained, but was cut last minute.
Overall, this album has some good songs, some catchy songs, and sadly some bad songs, which makes this Drake project just okay. Despite the downsides of the album, it is still worth the listen, with some of the memorable songs such as “Virginia Beach” and “First Person Shooter” bringing some needed depth to the tracklist.
