Lady Eagles Advance to Elite Eight

The Tyrone Lady Eagle basketball team continued their quest for Tyrone basketball immortality Tuesday night with a 53-38 victory over Mercyhurst Prep in the state playoff round of 16.

Tyrone was led by sophomore Jaida Parker who was also the games leading scorer, dropping 23 points while going 3-3 from the free-throw stripe.

Tyrone knocked down 5 threes on the night shooting 42% from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Emma Getz hit three 3-pointers, finishing with 9 points.

Junior Shannon Shaw hit the other 2 and finished with 8 points.

Tyrone’s offense had a hot first quarter followed by a cool second quarter. They jumped out to an early 18-8 lead only managed to score 4 more points in the second quarter.  Even after their second-quarter cold streak they still led a 22-21 lead at the half.

After Mercyhurst’s defensive lockdown in the second quarter, Tyrone followed up with a shut down third quarter.

The Lady Eagles held the Mercyhurst offense to only 4 points while widening the gap between them and their opponent. After the third quarter, Tyrone held a 33-25 lead.

Tyrone closed the door on a Mercyhurst comeback with a 20 spot in the fourth quarter securing their spot in the Elite 8. Although Mercyhurst’s point total in the fourth more than tripled the amount they scored in the third, it was not enough to knock off the Lady Eagles.

Tyrone will take on Beaver Falls in the Elite 8 Friday night at Armstrong Jr/Sr High School in Kittanning at 6 o’clock, with the winner advancing to the state semifinals.
