Golf Team Takes on the Mountain League at Clearfield
The Golden Eagle golf team took second place of seven teams on Thursday in Clearfield at Curwensville Country Club. Tyrone finished second behind Phillipsburg bringing their season record to 19-4-1.
Leading the Eagles was junior Jake Taylor, who carded a 2 over par 73, giving him a second place finish overall. This was Taylor’s personal best and he looks forward to the rest of the season.
“I was proud of myself that I stayed focused throughout the round,” says Taylor, “I was in a stable and good state of mind.”
Behind Taylor was senior Brent McNeel shooting a solid 80 giving him a fourth place finish. Colt Brooks and Trey Kyle also helped out the eagles by shooting an 88 and a 90, both just a few shots outside of the top 10.
“I was impressed that our number one and two shot a combined 153. I am also thrilled that Jake shot a personal record 73,” said first year coach Michael Funicelli.
While Funicelli was pleased in the performance of most starters, he expressed the need for more depth in the team.
“We need our starters to step up on other matches,” says Funicelli, “so far in our season our scores have been getting lower, and I’m hopeful for the matches to come.”
For the second time in the season McNeel and Taylor finished in the top 10 in the Mountain League.
The team took on all seven teams of the Mountain League at the Clearfield match, including Clearfield, Philipsburg, Penns Valley, Central, Huntingdon, Bald Eagle, and Bellefonte.
The golf team takes on the Mountain League again this Thursday, September 12 at Nittany Country Club.
