The Tyrone Golden Eagles Golf team had a tough time on the greens in their last regular season Laural Highlands match at Ebensburg Country Club, but persevered to finish in 4th place out of 7 teams, resulting in a 3-3 record for the day.
“The greens were some of the toughest I have ever played,” senior Logan Harpster said, “I didn’t play my best.”
Tyrone junior Caleb Miller topped the leaderboard for the Eagles with an 87, followed by junior Kaleb Sweitzer with a 90, junior Ty Uplinger shot a 95, and junior Preston Long tapped in with an even 100.
Tyrone finished with two players in the top 10.
Despite finishing top 10, Sweitzer was disappointed with his finish at Ebensburg.
“I guess you don’t know what the good days feel like if you don’t have bad ones,” Sweitzer said.
According to Harpster, overall they played well and competed to their standards.
The team survived through very tough players from other schools that put up a great fight, but unfortunately Tyrone just couldn’t overtake them.
“The team played very solidly on a tough course.” Coach Funicelli said.
This match marked the end of the regular season.
Although the PIAA has not set the official competitors for the postseason, players that have a chance of going to districts are Kaleb Sweitzer, Caleb Miller, Preston Long, Ty Uplinger and Will Lower.
The team is very young so finishing 14-13 is a success, said Funicelli.
“Our goal was to be right around .500, and we accomplished that,” said Funicelli. “Next, hopefully we will make some noise at Sectionals and Districts starting next week.”
Players from the golf team love the coaching and atmosphere of the team. The golf team is a great opportunity to learn how to play and get better at the game.
Coach Funicelli and Coach Sweitzer would love to see players return and new players join the game.
