Golden Eagles Season Ends with Heartbreaking loss to Central

The Golden Eagles finished the season 3-8 leaving room for improvement next season

Tyrone’s strong start was not enough to slay the Dragons, as the Golden Eagles fell to Central 21-10 on Friday night in the first round of the District 6 playoffs.

“Honestly, I think we played our best game of the season,” said Senior Captain Kyle Plummer. “I’m really proud of the team for going out there and not giving up until the last whistle.”

In the first quarter, both offenses halted not gaining any momentum, resulting in a 0-0 tie at the end of the first quarter.

Honestly, I think we played our best game of the season,” said Plummer. “I’m really proud of the team for going out there and not giving up until the last whistle.

Early in the second quarter, Tyrone lost a key part of their offense and defense when tight end/linebacker Cory Lehman broke his fibula. Miraculously, Lehman continued playing for several minutes after his injury.

Tyrone opened the scoring in the second quarter when Senior Parker Mitchell reached the end zone on a one-yard rush, giving Tyrone the 7-0 lead with 11:58 left in the second quarter.

Tyrone’s early lead was short lived, however as Central marched down the field on their next drive, scoring on a 32 yard run by Trysten Detwiler, tying the game 7-7 with 10:08 remaining in the second quarter.

Tyrone quickly regained the lead with 4:15 left in the half, when senior Ethan Vipond drilled a 30-yard field goal, giving the Eagles a 10-7 lead.

It looked as if Tyrone had capped off the scoring for the first half but on the ensuing kickoff, Central’s Trysten Detwiler took the kick 84 yards for the touchdown giving Central a 14-10 lead with 4 minutes left in the first half.

With the Dragon score two teams entered the half trading scores in the final minutes in the first half keeping the score 14-10 Dragons.

Tyrone’s defense held strong in the third quarter not giving up another score keeping the score a 14-10 Dragon lead heading into the fourth quarter.

No matter how hard Tyrone tried to score and take the lead, their drives stalled and the score remained 14-10.

Central delivered the final blow with 2 minutes left in the game when Trysten Detwiler punched in for the one-yard touchdown giving Central a 21-10 lead.

Central defeated the Eagles handing the Eagles their 8th loss of the season making Tyrone’s final record 3-8. Central takes on Forest Hills this week in the second round of the District 6 playoffs.

“I wish the season would have went better and I will miss my fellow teammates,” said Senior Christian Fink
