Dear Seniors: An Open Letter to the Class of 2020
Dear Seniors,
The world has never seen anything like what is happening now. We all have heard tales of traumatic events in the past like 911 and Hurricane Katrina. Those events shocked the world. However, this world event, this disaster, this major historical event is robbing us of one of the best, most memorable times of our lives. This is what we have been working toward, for 13 years of our lives.
The recognition and acclaim that seniors have gotten for their academic achievement and athletic excellence may not be bestowed upon us. Things like prom and graduation are in jeopardy. I don’t think any of us were even thinking about the end yet. We still had a whole marking period to go. There were so many more memories to be made and laughs to be shared among friends, but sadly we won’t finish our senior year at Tyrone High. We will finish it at home. But this doesn’t just affect us, seniors everywhere are affected, that’s why we have to stick together. Together we can get through this and come out stronger than ever. Every generation faces hardships, but this is our generation’s defying moment.
Our class has always been and always will be a class that producers top athletes and high test scores. We have worked our butts off to get here. We have put in the work we have given the time and we deserve the proper recognition. We are a diverse group of students. We don’t all share the same opinions or backgrounds. We are strong, we are courageous, but most importantly we are a family. And that is something that this coronavirus cannot take away from us. After graduation, some of us may not see each other ever again. We will all forget names and faces. Many of us will move on to do great things in the world. But the world will never forget the class of 2020.
No senior class has ever faced an obstacle like we face today. But we will show the world that we are stronger than this virus. It may be able to take away the last few weeks of senior year, it may take away prom, spring sports, and many other spring activities, but it can never take away our pride as a class. We are the class that sacrificed the remainder of our senior year, and that sacrifice will not go unnoticed. We are the class that will be remembered forever, we are the class that has earned our place in history.
No seniors even though we can’t finish out our days at Tyrone in school we can still make these last weeks memorable. This virus may have robbed us the rest of our senior year but it will not rob us of our happiness. Seniors – reach out to one another and be there for each other. We are all in this together. Share a memory with a friend. Stay in touch with one another.
For those of you that are seeing this that aren’t seniors, be there for us and support us. For all the underclassmen that are seeing this live every moment to its fullest in high school because we will be the first to tell you that you never know when it’s over. These are trying times but we will get through them. We are all going through the same thing. But there is an end to this struggle. We will emerge triumphant and we will beat this virus.
We are dreamers. We are fighters. We are the class of 2020.

Very well written letter expressing all of the disappointment of, not only the virus itself, but it’s far reaching effect on students. I wish you all nothing but the best in your futures (and you WILL have a future!). Thank you for posting your heartfelt feelings now.

So very well said. My hopes for all of you 2020 graduates is that you will use this year to excel to your very best. Please know that many people feel your disappointment, your parents and grandparents who have waited for this year for you. I have 2 grandchildren and a great niece that will graduate this year, and are missing all these last special events. Celebrate you, anyway in whatever way you can, safely. So to Tyrone, Forest Hills, Mc Cort and Grater Johnstown, all graduates, I hope you can make your future, your greatest, best, memories!
