Ask the Coach with Head Coach Jason Wilson

Each week of the football season, Head Coach Jason Wilson sits down with the Eagle Eye for an exclusive interview.

Ask the Coach with Head Coach Jason Wilson

EE: How do you think your team performed Friday night?

JW: They performed well, besides failing to score in the red zone. The last four weeks we were 100% in the red zone. There is definitely still room for improvement.

EE: Kicker, Ethan Vipond was six for six on PATs. Can you talk about his performance?

JW: He is getting better every week. He is more consistent, and maintains focus. It helps that the line blocked well for him.

EE: What did your line show you going up against a bigger line?

JW: I think that our lineman match up against most lines. Even though Bald Eagles line was bigger, the key was that they stayed low and drove their feet.

It has become a big rivalry the previous two years. The past two years the game has been really tight, coming down to one point. It’s also a lot of points for playoffs positioning. Also it is a conference game, which can help us achieve our goal of winning the Mountain League.

EE: The last 2 years Tyrone has fell short to Clearfield by one point. What adjustments will be made in order to not let that happen again?

JW: We are going to run our basic plays.  We will run with our same defense. The last two years came down to the special teams and the extra points. Special teams are a big key in games like this, and that’s where we have to execute.

EE: What is Clearfield’s biggest threat to Tyrone?

JW: They have size up front, along with a lot of athletic guys. They like to throw the ball around.  Defensively they play man coverage on the outsides. They are going to bring pressure at us, and their defensive line is really aggressive.

EE: Your special teams found the end zone for the third time this year, what are the major factors of the success?

JW: Continuous practice, and putting more emphasis into the special teams. They have responded and executed well.

EE: Why does the Clearfield game mean so much?

JW: It has become a big rivalry the previous two years.  The past two years the game has been really tight, coming down to one point. It’s also a lot of points for playoffs positioning.  Also it is a conference game, which can help us achieve our goal of winning the Mountain League.

EE: So far this season, what is your biggest surprise?

JW: Going into the season, we had some question marks on the offense and skill guys. We lost our starting quarterback, center, and running back. Where we are right now is a lot farther than I thought we would be.  We’ve come a long way from week one in those three positions.

EE: Did you expect this season to go the way it has been going?

JW: Like I said there was some question marks. I knew if we could execute the way we knew we could, we could be in this position we’re in. The road ahead of us is still tough, so we have to stay focused and take it one game at a time.

EE: What is your favorite animal?

JW: A cougar.

EE: Why is that?

JW: BYU.
