ABC Wing Reviews: Chill N Grill

We return a little closer to home with our sixth stop, the Chill N Grill in Tyrone. We judged their wings based on four categories: presentation, wing quality, sauce, and hospitality in order to grant an overall score on our patented wing-o-meter.

For this review, Andrew (A) got a dozen wings with the ‘Mild BBQ” sauce, Bryce’s (B) were covered in “Mild Garlic Butter”, and Christian (C) got “Garlic Parmesan”.

A dozen wings from Chill N Grill cost around $10.50.

Presentation

For this category, we based our ratings on how the wings looked before we began to chow down.

The Chill N Grill’s presentation was nothing to complain about. The wings came in a black basket covered in wax paper, a pretty standard set up. Also, the wings featured a cardboard boat for bone collection which was a nice touch. The wings themselves came out piping hot which was a major plus.

Wing Quality

For this category, the wings will receive a rating based on the overall quality, juiciness, and the bone to meat ratio of the chicken itself.

The wing quality as with the presentation was nothing to complain about. The skin of the wings had a decent crispness to them yet retained moist meat inside. The wings also retained their oven hot heat right up until the final wing. The wings were a bit smaller than what we would have liked but at least the size was consistent.

Sauce

The sauce category is about, you guessed it, the SAUCE, we judge this category on flavor, consistency, and coverage.

The “Mild BBQ” sauce was okay. The goal of this flavor is to combine the positives of both buffalo and barbeque, unfortunately, this sauce fell a little flat to that standard. The heat of the buffalo sauce outweighed that of the tanginess of the barbeque. While this was a tad unfortunate it did not drastically swing this sauce into a negative rating. Overall, this sauce somewhat achieves its goal and is not a bad alternative to classic buffalo. Not perfect, but not bad.

The “Mild Garlic Butter” sauce was overall pretty good. It had a nice buffalo flavor complimented with some garlic butter to give it a taste just as the name says. These wings weren’t anything too special but they’d make a nice pair with one of their pizza’s or stromboli.

The “Garlic Parmesan” sauce was one of the better garlic sauces I’ve has had. The presence of garlic was strong, but not too excessive. Every bite had a consistent garlic taste. The flakes of parmesan cheese added a little more flavor to improve the wings even more. There was a healthy amount of cheese on these wings too, and it complimented the garlic and the butter well. The only complaints are that there wasn’t much sauce to dip the wings in when the butter ran off of them, and the wings were a tad too salty for me.

Hospitality

This category reflects upon our overall experience at the restaurant taking into account: wait time, service, and friendliness.

The hospitality of the “Chill N Grill” was some of the best that we’ve reviewed. Our wings arrived at our table in a speedy 15 minutes and were oven hot. We were attended too often and our drinks refilled (which were free) at the same rate. Additionally, the waitress was very hospitable and answered any questions we had about the menu. Overall very good service.

Final Score

In conclusion, the “Chill N Grill” is a middle of the pack wing stop, however, their wings pair well as a side or appetizer to a pizza or stromboli.

A – 7.25/10    B – 7/10    C – 7.5/10

The Tavern’s grip on the wing crown remains unchallenged.
