The Tyrone Boys varsity soccer team faced Hollidaysburg (14-2-1) in the Golden Eagles’ regular season finale.
The teams battled once before this season, with Hollidaysburg taking a 3-2 win.
This time. Hollidaysburg got out to a 2-0 lead, and was able to hang on for the 2-1 win despite a Tyrone rally in the second half.
In the first half, Hollidaysburg and Tyrone were going back and forth, with neither team able to score. Although Hollidaysburg was controlling the ball more than Tyrone, the Tyrone defense was able to deny several Hollidaysburg scoring chances, keeping the Golden Eagles in the game.
Hollidaysburg scored first, giving them more energy than Tyrone. But Tyrone knew they couldn’t give up, and they were still in this game.
Hollidayburg scored another goal in the first half, making the score 2-0. Tyrone was down, but Tyrone did not give up and continued to press the ball forward, looking for a breakaway goal.
Tyrone freshman Miles Smearman scored with 10 minutes remaining in the second half to give Tyrone new life, but despite several chances the Golden Eagles were not able to score and Hollidaysburg hung on for the 2-1 win.
Both teams have qualified for the playoffs, and another matchup is possible in championship game in a couple of weeks.
