Headphones in, Problems out

Rant: Students should be allowed to use headphones while working in class

At TAHS we have multiple computer labs, mobile laptop carts, and 144 freshman who now have their own chromebooks. Students use computers to do research, type papers and many other types of work. Most teachers require their students to work on computers silently. However, many students prefer to listen to music on headphones while they work.

Most teachers  say “no headphones!”  But why?

Some teachers say that students tend to listen to their music too loud. I can only speak for myself, but I believe most teachers find headphones to be a problem because the feel students are not paying attention if the teacher needs to talk and they do not want to repeat themselves.

Teachers though should say everything that needs to be addressed at the beginning of class. Therefore, when students are focused and in the zone they are not disturbed. Teachers hate it when they are trying to teach and a student inturrupt them, but that’s how we feel when we are working and teachers distract or interrupt us.

Headphones help because by using them we can escape from the noise of others, forget about what’s going on outside of the class, and stay focused.

Honestly, I do not see what it can hurt. If anything it helps us students.

Students should be allowed to listen to music with headphones.
