And the streak continues: Tennis notches another victory

Like the home match against Chestnut Ridge on September 8th, the following match at Clearfield September 9th was another victory in the books.

Sophomore Tina Hollen (Bellwood) took a quick lead with four straight games, but then her opponent changed court position, and forced her to take shorter hits. As each game progressed, Hollen held a strong serve and easily won the first set 6,1.

Senior Hannah Klesius (Bellwood) breezed through her first single match taking charge at the net winning 6,0.

Then disaster stuck. Dark clouds loomed overhead and the wind whistled through rackets.

Hollen’s second single match required even more adjustment than her first. The wind put extra spin on her hits. Requiring extra aim, Hollen broke away triumphantly winning her second set 6,2.

The final score of Klesius’s second set showed how much the wind affected hitting. Klesius won one game and Clearfield won the second. This continued until Klesius hammered the ball away from her opponent winning 7, 5.

However, the wind never posed as a problem to senior Marlena Wagner. She stated, “Having a powerful forehand and backhand cuts through the wind.” Wagner conquered her single matches winning 6, 0 and 6, 1.

On the other side of the courts a long game was ahead of senior Erika Voyzey. Losing her first set and triumphantly winning her second, Voyzey became a victim of her first tie breaker. Clearfield’s coach knew his player’s strength and opted for a serve-off. Trailing behind by 8 points, Voyzey makes an incredible comeback. It was 9, 9 and two points on either side needed to be scored to win. Even though Voyzey put up a fight, it wasn’t enough.

Tyrone stole the win even before the double matches started. The score was 3-2.

By that time, the wind had been mollified and the action had its demise. Hollen and Wagner annihilated their eight game pro set 8,0.  Klesius and Voyzey creamed their opponents in a six game pro set winning 6, 0.
