Junior Kyle Scott and senior Logan Rumberger were Tyrone’s top finishers at the Laural Highlands tournament at Central Cambia High School on January 3rd and 4th.
Scott finished second to Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close. Both wrestlers are returning state place winners and also ranked high in the PA Power Wrestling’s state rankings at 189.
Close knocked Scott into the consolation bracket at the PIAA Class 2A State Championships last season, so it was a match that Scott was looking forward to.
Unfortunately, Scott fell in a 6-1 decision to Close in the championship round.
It was the first loss for Scott this season after 14 straight wins.
“He’s a good opponent, obviously,” Scott said. “I’ve had some troubles with him in the past. He’s really big, and I’m a little undersized for my weight class. I’m not a true 189-pounder. That does play a factor, but I think I wrestled well. I think I can capitalize off of stuff. My shot was sloppy and I couldn’t stay in the center. It’s stuff I need to work on.”
Scott will likely see Close more this season, so he will still have an opportunity to avenge the loss with even more on the line.
Scott cruises to the finals, earning three tech falls in his first three matches against James Hill from Johnstown 17-2, Bellefonte’s Luke Huckenberry 18-0, and Johnstown’s Grayson Mahla 17-2.
Senior Logan Rumberger was the only other place winner for the Golden Eagles.
Rumberger lost his first match 19-3 to Bald Eagle’s Caden Judice, dropping Rumberger to the constellation rounds.
Rumberger’s won his second match 10-2 against Forest Hill’s Brody Custer, but then lost his third 6-2 to Chestnut Ridge’s Trenden Willey.
“I felt like I was wrestling well but in my consy 4 bout I got my knee twisted and things went downhill from there,” Rumberger said.
Rumberger had to forfeit his last match for seventh place due to a leg injury, dropping him to an eighth-place finish.
As a team, Tyrone finished 18th out of 20.
Bishop McCort won the team title by a huge 117.5 point margin, 302.5-185, over second-place Clearfield. Chestnut Ridge was third with 149 points.
