The Golden Eagle wrestling team took to the mat for the first time this season, and while the predominantly young roster suffered a 51-20 defeat, there were still several solid accomplishments for Tyrone.
“Our team may be young, but we showed determination and we brought the energy. There are key things as a team we have to work on. Personally, It felt good being back on the mat after not wrestling for almost a full year,” Rumberger said.
Senior Logan Rumberger, juniors Kyle Scott and Kaden Ansman, and sophomore Andrew Detwiler were Tyrone’s four victorious wrestlers.
The match began at the 189-pound weight class, where Junior Kyle Scott earned a tech fall in just 42 seconds.
Scott is coming off a season highlighted by an eighth-place finish at the 2024 PIAA State Championship Tournament, and this first match was a great start to his junior season.
“We’re a young team, but I still think we’re going to be competitive,” Scott said.
Moving on to 215 pounds, Junior Kaden Ansman fared well in an exciting bout.
After three and one-half minutes of competitive wrestling, Ansman was down 1-0. However, he got into a contested position with his opponent. It appeared as though Ansman was going to be taken down, but Ansman swiftly reversed the position and managed to turn his opponent to his back for a pin. Tyrone led 11-0 after the first two matches.
However, Hollidaysburg would battle back following the early Tyrone success.
The Golden Tigers won 4 of the next 5 matches by fall, as well as 6 points for a Tyrone forfeit at the 121 pound weight class, which quickly surged them to a 30-11 advantage.
Tyrone Senior Logan Rumberger finally got Tyrone back into the win column in the 133-pound weight class. Rumberger dominated his match and earned a pin after jumping out to an early 11-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles were pinned in 5 of their next 6 matches, with the only victory coming from Andrew Detwiler. Detwiler obtained multiple takedowns in an impressive 12-7 victory.
The Golden Eagles return to the mat again on Saturday, December 7th at Philipsburg Osceola.
