Work Progresses on TAHS House Project
Tyrone carpentry students and teacher Dan Plummer continue to work hard on the house project, now in its third year. The house is now under roof and the garage has been set up.
Mr. Plummer and his students poured concrete in the basement and garage in October. According to Plummer, the basement is the biggest project for this year. His juniors and senior have been going in for two to three periods a day coating the walls with waterproof paint and putting up plastic wrap on the wall.
The students are currently building the walls in the basement. Once the walls are in place, Plummer hopes to get the basement wiring and plumbing done so they can put in insulation and drywall and get work done on the outside. Unlike past house projects, the students will be doing all the wiring and plumbing themselves.
“The juniors and seniors have been working very hard in order to get this house done in time. This a good group of kids that I’m working with,” said Plummer.
According to many of the students involved, they enjoy going to the house no matter what the weather is like. Even if it’s a harsh blizzard they are ready to deal with the elements and get what they need done. Fortunately, the house does have heaters to warm the students in the cold.
“I love working in the cold weather. The only problem is that even though you might be good at hammering you always end up hitting your piggies,” said senior Devon Brown.
“Being over at the house project has taught me a lot [of skills] that I can use in the future. It also provides a look at being in construction in the future and sets up a job opportunity,” said junior Matt Davis.
Some of Mr. Plummer’s plans are to get the basement done and finish the outside wall.
“We are trying our best to get this done fast and continue on the inside of the house. The inside still needs drywall and insulation to be installed and should be done by the end of this year,” said Plummer.
Plummer expects the house to be fully completed by the end of next year. With great improvement on the students and how much they know, this house should be a great one to live in.
When complete, the house will go on sale to the public.
“It looks great. Its crazy to think how much work has been done. I remember when the class was started by pouring cement for the porch,” said junior RaShawn Hicks.
