Eleven Tyrone seniors left Gray Field with smiles on Friday following a big 28-13 victory over Chestnut Ridge. It was a fitting way to end their final home game of their high school careers.
“I was putting everything into this game,” senior Eli Woomer said after the game, “There’s nothing like winning your last home game, in front of your home crowd, and possibly moving up in the playoffs.”
Big plays on both sides of the ball helped drive Tyrone to victory.
The Tyrone defense played a significant role in the win, causing four fumbles, two of which were recovered by the Golden Eagles. They also held a tough Chestnut Ridge rushing attack to just 105 yards rushing on the night.
Tyrone was able to capitalize on those turnovers and turn them into points. Senior Eli Woomer returned an interception for a 24-yard touchdown in the third quarter to increase Tyrone’s lead to three scores and essentially ice the game.
“We played well and did what we had to do to win. If we want to make a run in the playoffs, we have to play like that,” Woomer said.
Woomer also produced 129 yards of total offense and got the Eagles on the board first with a 23-yard strike on a slant to Emigh with 5:05 left in the first quarter. His 83 yards passing put him over 1,300 yards on the season. The versatile Woomer also caught two passes for 38 yards.
Statistically, the game was fairly even, with Chestnut Ridge having only 31 fewer total yards than the Golden Eagles. But the big plays by the Golden Eagles proved to be the difference.
Another big play came when junior Ben Walk came in off the bench at quarterback in the first half after Woomer suffered a minor injury. Walk immediately threw a 47-yard strike to senior Brayden Parsons for a touchdown, which put Tyrone ahead 14-7 with 3 minutes left in the first half.
For the first round of the District 6 playoffs, the Golden Eagles will face off against the 7-3 Huntingdon Bearcats on the road, whom they have previously beaten in a blowout win, 41-21.
If the Golden Eagles beat Huntingdon, they will play the winner of Penn Cambria and Forest Hills at Mansion Park in Altoona next weekend for the District 6 title.
