Tyrone track and field traveled to Saint Francis University for the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Championships. Several Tyrone athletes placed high and will be contenders for the District Championship podium next week. First place finishers for Tyrone were the boys 3200 relay and freshman Lola Woomer in the high jump.
Boys
The Tyrone boys relay team of senior Aiden Detwiler, senior Thomas Sutt, junior Alexander Brumbaugh, and senior Dante Novak won the 3200 relay in 8:20.58.
The 3200-meter relay team is within one second of the school record, which they hope to break at Districts on May 13th and 14th.
Sophomore Mason Emigh placed fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 43-1.
Dante Novak placed eighth in the long jump with a jump of 20-11 and was also a part of the 1600 meter relay with teammates Aiden Detwiler, sophomore Tytus Novak, and sophomore Drew Irons that placed eighth as well.
Irons also placed sixth in the 400-meter with a time of 52.97.
Sophomore Kyler Suhoney placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Senior Cian Hockenberry placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 122-0.
Girls
Tyrone’s Lola Woomer won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 4 inches. Woomer also won the high jump at the Bellwood-Antis Invitational and the Mountain Lion Classic last week.
“It feels really great, especially only being a freshman,” Woomer said. “I see what other people are doing, and I just try and compete with them. I want to make it to States, and I eventually want to try to get to 5-8. I focused more on getting up and then getting out today, and I didn’t let the height get into my head.”
The girls’ 400 relay finished second to Somerset with a time of 50.97.
Senior Kylee Nelson took second place in the javelin with a throw of 113-9.
Sophomore Sara Chichester placed in two individual events at the meet. She was third in the 200-meter dash with a 26.51 and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a 13.16.
Junior Claire Lehman was third in the 300-meter hurdles with a 48.45.
Junior Nicole Ramsey was third in the triple jump with a 35-2.75; fifth in the long jump with a 16-10.75, and eighth in the 200 with a 27.4.
