The TAHS All Eagles Club, a student group that promotes acceptance and inclusion for all students, would like everyone to wear orange on Wednesday, October 16 in honor of Unity Day
Unity Day is an annual event on the third Wednesday of October to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
According to the National Bullying Prevention Center, the goal of Unity Day is to “bring together youth, parents, educators, and community members to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.”
Orange was chosen because the color because it is a color associated with safety and visibility, it is warm and inviting, and its vibrancy makes an impactful statement.
Students are also encouraged to get involved with the All Eagles Club, where they can promote a culture of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion at TAHS on a regular basis.
Junior Piper Myers, one of the founding members of All-Eagles, would like to see more students get involved in the organization.
“We always have a great time when we get together for meetings. I see more smiles in just one space at a time than I might’ve seen all day in a wider range of space,” Myers said. “It’s one of the only times all kids can feel included in something. It allows everyone to feel like they can be themselves without being judged.”
Tyrone High School teacher Sarah Latchford is an adviser for the All-Eagles club. She also wants students to participate in Unity Day and get involved with All-Eagles.
“[Students] should participate to help raise awareness about social issues like bullying and promote inclusivity and show that we have a supportive school environment and want to make a positive impact,” Latchford said.
The All-Eagles Club holds monthly meetings for students of all abilities to get together for fun activities like board games, cooking, sports, and more.
The club was established in 2021 but took last year off while the Unified Bocce team was in its first year, but it is back this year and hopes to do many activities.
Students can get involved by contacting TAHS teachers Shannon Davis or Sarah Latchford in their classroom or by sending them an email.
