Tyrone Area High School wrestling standout Logan Rumberger will join the Washington and Jefferson College wrestling program after a decorated high school career.
The decision marks a major milestone in a journey defined by dedication, perseverance, and standout achievements on and off the mat.
Despite battling several injuries, Rumberger posted 91 career wins, was a three-time district placer, a southwest regional qualifier, and a two-time District 6 first team.
Being tall for his weight class, Rumberger is known for his unconventional wrestling style, keeping distance on his feet to create angles.
His work ethic has improved throughout the season thanks to help from the Tyrone coaching staff and teammate Kyle Scott. Scott and Rumberger have been the team leaders for the past several seasons.
“I’m very proud of Logan for his commitment, he has always been one of the hardest workers. I’m excited to watch him wrestle at the college level and glad I was able to be a part of his journey,” teammate Kyle Scott said.
Despite Rumberger’s successful career on the mat, his senior season did not go as planned.
“I started the season out rough because I got too comfortable with myself,” said Rumberger, “I put in no extra work, and I slacked off a lot.”
However, about midway through the season, Rumberger went on a tear with a 15-0 run spanning over three weeks.
With this win streak, Rumberger gained confidence and was looking like his old self again. However, in a regular-season tournament, Rumberger popped his kneecap out of place.
The injury was devastating for Rumberger, who had to sit out the remainder of the regular season, but was lucky enough to recover in time for districts.
“Wrestling has taught me that accepting defeat is okay sometimes. You can’t win every match, but just being able to wrestle is something to be grateful for,” Rumberger said, “It’s all about knowing that the only limits are the ones I put on myself and always having goals to strive for.”
In choosing Washington and Jefferson, Rumberger cited the program’s tradition of excellence, coaching staff, and the opportunity to compete at a high level.
All of these are good aspects of schools in the recruiting process, but what made W&J stand out to Rumberger was the welcoming nature of the program.
“I was drawn to Coach Sonnie and the W&J wrestling program because of their commitment to making me feel like I was a part of the family already,” he explained. “Coach Sonnie always praised me highly, even if I had a bad tournament, and I think that’s what really matters.”
Tyrone wrestling coach Coach Quentin Wright praised the W&J wrestling program as well.
“W&J is a wonderful university with a fine wrestling program. Their coach embodies a lot of wrestling values in which Tyrone promotes,” Wright said, “Logan is going to be a great asset to the program, and I look forward to seeing him continue to be successful.”
Rumberger plans to major in Marketing and minor in Communication Arts at Washington and Jefferson.
In his announcement, Rumberger thanked those who supported him throughout his journey.
“I would like to thank all of my coaches over the years, the Tyrone community, and my childhood best friends for always making wrestling fun. But most importantly, my family and the Lord Himself. I’m excited for this next chapter of my career and ready to represent W&J with pride.”
Before heading to Washington and Jefferson, Rumberger aims to get stronger and bigger this summer to prepare for the higher level. With getting bigger, he may also bump up a weight class and wrestle either 133 or 141 in college.
With his commitment, Rumberger joins a long line of Tyrone wrestlers making their mark at the collegiate level, and the W&J wrestling team gains a competitor ready to embrace the challenge.
