Tyrone beat Northern Bedford at home last night 43-27 to earn their first dual meet win of the season.
The Golden Eagle wrestlers had several great bouts, earning a pin by senior Logan Rumberger, two technical falls by Rhys Rawlings and Andrew Detwiler, and a double overtime tiebreaker decision by heavyweight John Eaken.
Northern Bedford had only nine wrestlers available for the match, which resulted in four forfeits for Tyrone versus only two for Northern Bedford.
“Based on the last dual meet, I saw they didn’t have a lot of people wrestling,” Tyrone head coach Quentin Wright told the Altoona Mirror. “I was looking at the matchups and kind of matched up where we had holes, and we matched up where they had holes. It was like seven bouts, where you had to win those bouts.”
Tyrone’s first two wrestlers, Rhys Rawlings at 139 and Andrew Detwiler at 145 earned tech falls to get the Golden Eagles off to a positive start.
Tyrone’s Mason VanAllman then won by forfeit at 152.
At 160, Northern’s Jordan Free beat Tyrone’s Tyler Connelly 9-2.
At 172 Tyrone’s Kyler Suhoney was up 3-1 but was pinned by Northern Bedford’s Aidan Pittman at 2:46.
Next, Tyrone standout Kyle Scott (11-0) got his team’s second forfeit of the night at 189.
In the heavyweight bout, Tyrone’s John Eaken earned his first varsity win in double-overtime.
Eaken opened the scoring with a takedown on NB’s Gavin Jessee in the second period but gave up an escape. Jessee then scored on a takedown for a 4-3 lead but Eaken escaped in the third to tie the bout at 4-4.
In overtime, Jessee nearly escaped, but Eaken held on with the front headlock and won, 5-4, for his first varsity victory.
“The other night against Huntingdon, we had the chance to get John in a JV match,” Wright told the Altoona Mirror, “and he was able to get his first win. I think that was helpful because he was able to go the full length of the match. He just kept his mind in it and was able to tough it out.”
Tyrone’s Haliegh Hunter (107) and Malakai Wicker (114) won by forfeit, and Tyrone gave up forfeits to NB’s Aiden Replogle (121) and Wyatt Clouse (127).
In the last bout of the night, Tyrone senior Logan Rumberger earned a pin over NB’s Free in 1:47 at 133 to ensure Tyrone’s victory.
Tyrone improved to 1-4 and Northern Bedford fell to 1-4.
