Tyrone Wrestlers Improve to 2-0
After defeating Northern Bedford last week, a 38-27 victory over the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers on Tuesday night has the Tyrone wrestlers at 2-0 to start the season.
“We’re getting better with each and every match,” said Tyrone Head Coach Quentin Wright to the Altoona Mirror. “I’m very proud of this group of kids. They’re very respectful, and they’re doing what I am telling them to do.”
Wright is a former four-time Penn State NCAA All-American and two-time NCAA champion, so there are high expectations for the team moving forward.
Three Tyrone wrestlers won by forfeit: Zac Lash (172), Korry Walls (113), and Jermane Myers (160).
The wrestling began at 120 with a 47-second pin by freshman Logan Rumburger over Hollidaysburg freshman James Bialo.
Tyrone senior Ashton Sipes (132) then scored a 16-1 technical fall over Hollidaysburg’s Jacob Bruna in 1:50.
Hollidaysburg’s Aaron Sleeththen pinned Tyrone senior Jason Barr (189) after a hard-fought match that spanned three periods, lasting 3:16.
Sophomore Jacob Rice (215) was pinned by Luke Onkst in 1:34.
Junior Reese Wood pinned Quinton Ritchey in 42 seconds adding 6 points to the board.
The wrestlers are excited about the season and the team’s prospects moving forward.
“[Coach Wright] has a good knowledge of the sport, and it’s showing off in the wrestling room. He’s creating an exciting atmosphere. Just expect a lot of winning this year from Tyrone,” senior Ashton Sipes told the Altoona Mirror.
Both Tyrone and Hollidaysburg will be back on the mats at the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Aloysius College this weekend.
