Three Tyrone Wrestlers Advance at Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association Districts
Tyrone sophomores Jamal Hicks, Duane Hann, and Derrick Harris all competed for a Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association (MAWA) district title at Juniata High School on March 19th, 2016. All three will advance to the Regional competition later this month.
Hicks was placed in a four man bracket in the elite division. In the first match, Hicks defeated Alex Laughlin of Millersville 8-6 in overtime.
Going into his second match in the championship, Hicks fell to a major decision 16-2, and finished in second place.
“I got poked in the eye. I couldn’t see, but I won’t let that be an excuse for why I lost. I guarantee if we face again, it will be a lot closer than that,” said Hicks.
However, Hicks opponent in the championship will not wrestle at Regionals, so Hicks will move into first place in his bracket for Regionals.
Hann was automatically in the championship bout because there was only one other wrestler in his bracket. He pinned Isaiah Smith of Wrightsville at the end of the first period, giving Hann his first career tournament championship.
“At regionals I’m not taking anyone lightly,” said Hann, “I am going to wrestle my hardest and hopefully come out with another first place medal. Just got to keep lifting, work on my shots, and keep conditioned.”
Being the only entry in his bracket, Harris did not even have to wrestle to advance. “I was a little upset, but hey, I’m moving on. I can’t be mad at that,” said Harris.
