Tyrone’s effective full-court press has limited their first three opponents to 41, 42, and 32 points respectively.
When asked about the defense in Tyrone’s 75-32 rout of Bald Eagle on Monday night, senior Kendall Lehner said it was good, but not good enough.
“The offense played solid, but the press needs to be more intense,” Lehner said.
That’s exactly the defensive attitude that Tyrone head Coach Luke Rhoades would like to build on as the season progresses.
Rhoades again sent the Golden Eagles on a mission to dismantle their opponent’s offense with a full-court press. The press forced many turnovers keeping the ball in the hands of Tyrone’s offense, led by a solid shooting performance from senior guard Sam Crilly.
Crilly scored 17 in the first half and had 23 total points.
Lehner also had a solid night, scoring 14 points, grabbing multiple rebounds, and playing solid defense.
Crilly and most of the other Tyrone starters sat out the entire fourth quarter as Tyrone Head Coach Luke Rhoades was able to get his reserve players some valuable experience.
“I’m not the happiest about the way we played but it’s a good step in the right direction,” Crilly said.
Tyrone’s defense limited Bald Eagle’s leading scorers Cowan and Millward to single digits, with both scoring just 9 points.
The first half was relatively close until about the middle of the second quarter when the Golden Eagle’s shooters started seizing their opportunities and quickly ran up the score.
By the end of the half, Tyrone had a 52-23 lead and didn’t miss a beat after the break.
Right out of the half, Senior Drew Escala caught a lob from Senior Ashton Walk to set the tone for the second half making the score 54-23.
Tyrone came out flying around the ball and forcing turnovers, which resulted in easy layups and open shots.
Not long after this coach Rhoades started to put some extra depth in the game to give the starters a break and close out the game.
The bench continued Tyrone’s scoring rampage and played exceptional defense to close the game out 75-32 and propel the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 record.
Bald Eagle’s record fell to 0-2.
Tyrone also dominated the JV game 72-12. Carter Gwinn was the leading scorer with 16 points.
Tyrone will take on the Bellefonte Red Raiders on Thursday 12/12 at home at 7:30pm.
