Thanks to an offensive explosion, Tyrone celebrated their first home regular-season game at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field this season with a 49-6 win against the Westmont Hilltoppers.
“We ran the ball really well, and it feels good because we couldn’t run last week,” said Ashton Emigh.
The Tyrone offense put up 265 rushing yards to Westmont’s 19, and the Golden Eagles finished the game with over 400 yards in total offense.
“The offensive line had a huge night, and we came together to help get our team the win,” said senior guard and defensive lineman John Stanton.
After the Golden Eagles forced the Hilltoppers to punt on their first drive, Caleb Whitby ran for 64 yards on their first offensive play from scrimmage to put Tyrone at the goalline. This led to an Ashton Emigh touchdown, his first of the game.
On the next drive, after a stop on fourth down for the Eagles’ defense, senior quarterback Eli Woomer led the team down the field for an 8-play 76-yard drive that capped off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior Brayden Parsons.
After a Marshall Martin score from Eli Woomer, Westmont had finally responded and made the score 21-6. But just before half, senior Ashton Emigh found the endzone for his second touchdown of the game. Leaving the score 28-6 at halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Eagles continued to run the ball down the Hilltoppers’ throats with Caleb Whitby scoring twice, both on long runs being 36 and 30 yards down the field. This put the score at 42-6 and made it possible for both JV teams to get some time.
The Golden Eagles scored again as freshman Reid Starr got into the endzone to make the final score 49-6. This concluded a great rushing game for Tyrone as they ran for 265 yards and five rushing touchdowns. This was important because in their last game, Tyrone only had 49 yards rushing.
The Golden Eagles also did an excellent job stopping the run, only allowing 17 yards after last week’s 168 yards rushing.
The offensive line had a huge night too, after a rough outing in their last game. The Golden Eagles’ line did not let up a sack and did a great job in run blocking for their backfield.
Tyrone moves to 1-1, and heads to Central (1-1) this Friday.
Records: Tyrone (1-1); Westmont Hilltop (0-2).
Next week: Westmont travels to Richland. Tyrone will play at Central.
