The Lady Eagles Volleyball team kicked off the season with a 2-3 record and are gaining momentum as the season progresses.
In their season opener against Huntingdon, the Lady Eagles took a hard loss to the Lady Bearcats in four sets: 18-25, 17-25, and the third set being a close fight with the Bearcats coming out on top 26-28.
There were a lot of nerves, emotions, and first-game jitters from the players in the game, but senior Libero Kylee Nelson had an incredible game with 30 digs, earning her Eagle Eye Athlete of the Week honors for the first week of the fall athletic season.
“It’s pretty early in the season to get all of our mistakes and bad games out of the way,” Nelson said, “I think the rest of the season we will come out and play much better than we have for the past two weeks. We have a lot to work on but I think the rest of the season will go pretty well and hopefully not have any more losses in our future games.”
The girl’s first win of the season came at Central Martinsburg Dragons on August 29. Tyrone beat Central in three action-packed sets with lots of ups and downs for both teams, with Central almost stealing a set from Tyrone.
On September 3, the Eagles took another win at home versus the Penns Valley Rams in four sets.
Penns Valley played very scrappy throughout each set. In the first few sets the Lady Eagles struggled to get things going but pulled through in the end.
The Clearfield Bison upset the Golden Eagles on September 5th.
The Lady Bison swept the Lady Eagles in three sets. Junior outside Rylan Crowell had a great offensive game with 13 kills, leading the team. Tyrone struggled to get things going in the first set, falling to the Lady Bison 25-21. The second set was nothing short of a dogfight, however, the Lady Eagles were again short, losing 25-21.
This past Tuesday, the Eagles took on Philipsburg Osceola at home in a long four-set loss.
The first and second sets were rough with the first set ending 9-25 and the second ending 10-25 both wins going to PO. The third set the Lady Eagles pulled through winning the set 25-23. The game at this point was energetic and the dog-pound was hyped for the Lady Eagles. The fourth set was back and forth but ended with the Lady Mounties taking the win 25-27.
“I felt like our Dawg Pound [student section] had a big part in us winning the third set after we had two big upsets in the first two sets,” junior Elise Volders said. “Our energy as a team was getting higher throughout the course of each set but I feel like for future games we need to bring more energy on and off the court.”
The team will continue to try to improve from last year’s 12-8-1 record.
