The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning in the annual baseball Backyard Brawl, but Tyrone bounced back in the second inning with four runs of their own and never looked back in an 8-4 win.
“There are times where you’re gonna get behind in a game and you just have to keep playing hard, and that’s what we did,” Ewing said.
Bellwood’s early production came from the bat of Matt Berkowitz, who launched a two-run home run off Tyrone starter Dylan Ewing in the first.
Bellwood would also get a home run from Chase Plummer in the 7th inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Golden Eagles’ 15-hit performance.
Conner Zupon led Tyrone with three hits. Ashton Walk, Connor McClure, Owen Oakes, and Brayden Parsons had two hits in the game.
“We were able to string a good bit of hits together, which we have been improving on throughout the season, but we still left the bases loaded multiple times, so there were still a lot of runs up for grabs,” Tyrone junior outfield Brayden Parsons said.
The pitching helped propel the Eagles to victory. Despite giving up two home runs, the pitchers worked out of several jams to escape harm.
Tyrone’s fielding was also stellar, with only one error in the game.
The Golden Eagles improved their record to 9-4 while Bellwood fell to 4-6.
Tyrone’s next game is at Chestnut Ridge on Friday at 4:30 pm.
