The Tyrone Boys and Girls Track and Field teams traveled to Phillipsburg for their first away meet of the season on Tuesday, March 25.
It was a very windy meet, but that didn’t stop the Tyrone boys and girls from pulling out wins against Somerset, Westmont Hilltop, and Philipsburg.
Both Tyrone teams are undefeated at 5-0 to start the season.
BOYS:
The boys team beat all three teams attending the meet at Philipsburg. They defeated PO 121-29, Somerset 92-58, and Westmont 123-27.
Tyrone’s distance crew won the 3200-meter relay and swept the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and the 3200 meter.
“I was really proud of the way our team came out and competed in less than ideal weather conditions. We continue to lay the foundation for a great season,” Tyrone Head Coach Brad Kanuch said.
Sophomore Drew Irons had a standout performance, winning the 200 meter with a time of 23.69 and the 400 meter with a time of 54.49.
Irons was also part of the winning 1600-meter relay team along with senior Dante Novak, sophomore Tytus Novak, and sophomore Kyler Suhoney with a time of 3 minutes 45 seconds.
Senior Tom Sutt had a great night, taking first in both the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter. He was also on the winning 3200-meter relay with teammates senior Aiden Detwiler, junior Alex Brumbaugh, and Dante Novak.
“Everybody on the distance team had been working really hard in the off-season, and now we are enjoying the benefits,” said Tom Sutt.
Some other winners included sophomore Caleb Whitby in the long jump with a jump of 21-3, Brumbaugh in the 800 meter with a time of 2:17.24, and junior Ashton Emigh in the javelin with a throw of 138-5.
Some other notable performances included Kyler Suhoney who came in second in both the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles, senior Logan Rumberger came in second in the high jump with a jump of 5-6, and the 400 meter relay team that consisted of senior Trent Adams, senior Austin Lucas, senior Seth Hoover, and Caleb Whitby.
Sophomore Mason Emigh placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 40-5.
Freshman Cam Coffey placed second in the 800 meter with a time of 2:24.07.
GIRLS:
The girls team had a close meet with Somerset and ended up taking home the win by just 1 point. They swept both the other teams, defeating Westmont by 57 points and Philipsburg by 83 points.
Junior Nicole Ramsey was a double winner for the girls, taking first in both triple jump and long jump. She also was a part of the winning 400-meter relay team, which included senior Alayna Greene, junior Claire Lehman, and sophomore Sarah Chichester.
Sophomore Taylor Wrye took second in the 400-meter dash, as well as second in the 800-meter dash. Junior Alyssa Houck took third in both the 400-meter dash and 800-meter dash.
Sophomore Sarah Chichester had an outstanding 200-meter dash with a time of 26.78 seconds, winning first place. She also placed second in the 100-meter dash.
In the 300-meter hurdles, junior Claire Lehman took second, running a time of 52.55, and freshman Kiana Gardner took third.
In the high jump, freshman Lola Woomer took first, jumping a height of 5-2, and senior Nelson placed second, jumping a height of 4-9. Lola Woomer also took second in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump.
In the 1600-meter relay, Tyrone’s team, including Sarah Chichester, Alyssa Houck, Taylor Wrye, and Claire Lehman, took first, running a time of 4:36.
“I think our relay performed really well and will continue to improve. I’m hoping by the end of the season, we can beat the current record of 4:15.” said Junior Alyssa Houck.
Sophomore Josie Dicken dominated the throws, taking first in shotput and second in discus.
Senior Kylie Nelson placed first in javelin throwing 111 feet and 5 inches.
Junior Addison Warren took second place in pole vault, jumping 7 feet.
Considering the less than ideal windy and cold conditions, the girls had excellent performances.
The next meet for Tyrone will be the Igloo Invitational held at Mansion Park in Altoona on Saturday, March 29. The meet begins at 10:00 am
