Tyrone Track and Field Earns Historic Double Win vs Rival Bellwood
It is always a great feeling when Tyrone defeats its arch rival, Bellwood Antis. Its especially gratifying when the win is a first in school history.
According to assistant coach Steve Everhart, this is the first time in at least 30 years that Tyrone has scored a double win against Bellwood. The girls defeated Bellwood 80-70 and the boys 89-61.
Coach Shedd knew by looking at the times that both teams had a great shot at a win, but he still had to make sure that he had all of his athletes in the right events and positions. “It’s just a matter of picking the match-ups smartly and hoping that everyone has an on-par day. We were within a few points of our estimates of the outcomes,” said Shedd.
Cinching the win for the girls, Cassie Friday volunteered to run the 3200 m. Only needing a third place to win, Friday pushed herself and took the win.
“We told her all she had to do was finish 3rd to seal the deal—but if you know Cassie, that’s like telling an avalanche to back off just a little. She laid it all out and won,” said Coach Everhart.
“I knew all I had to do was take a third, but I knew I had a chance to win it, I had to go for it,” said Friday.
The boys and girls both took pride in the huge win.
The Kohler brothers dominated in both the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runs taking first and second in all.
Junior Parker Mitchell was also a double winner in both the 100m and 200m. Sophomore Denver Light PR’d in the disc, Michael Lewis stepped up in the triple jump, Torrie Foy PR’d in the javelin, and the relay teams performed well.
“This win was special not just because the girls have one of the best (if not the best) winning percentages in the history of the girls program at 7-2. We’ve had a lot of state qualifiers over the years, but never a team of girls with this much breadth of talent and this much guts. They suck it up when they’re injured, tired, and hurting,” said Coach Everhart.
The boys team finished the season with an impressive record of 8-1 and the girls were 7-2.
“[We had] A very successful regular season. We had some injuries and other set-backs, but the boys finished the regular season at 8-1 and the girls were 7-2…any team that ends up 15-3 is probably feeling pretty good about their post-season possibilities,” said Shedd.
