Tyrone Track and Field opened their season yesterday with dominating double wins against visiting West Branch and Homer Center.
The boys did something almost unheard of in track and field, shutting out West Branch 145-0.
They also beat Homer Center by a wide 109-37 margin, giving the Tyrone boys team a perfect record of 2-0 to start the season.
“In all my years I have never seen a shutout,” Tyrone Head Coach Brad Kanuch said.
On the girl’s side, Tyrone also dominated the visiting squads, beating Homer-Center 113-19, and West Branch 113-28.
BOYS
The Tyrone boys swept both visiting teams in seven events: the 100-meter dash, 400-meter, 1600-meter, 3200-meter, 300-meter hurdles, 400-meter relay, and the long jump.
“Some of the standout performances were Caleb Whitby’s long jump, Tommy Sutt in the distance events and Nate Erickson continuing to be a PR machine. All three of those boys put in a lot of work in the winter,” Kanuch said.
Whitby was a triple winner for the boys, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.4, in the long jump Whitby stretched out a 21-4, and he also pole vaulted to first with an 8-foot vault.
Whitby was also a part of the winning 4×100 team along with seniors Trent Adams, Austin Lucas, and Seth Hoover.
Senior Tom Sutt dominated the distance events, winning the 1600 with a time of 5:01 and 3200 in 11:14, and senior Aiden Detwiler won the 800 in 2:14.
Junior Nate Erickson also continued to PR and help the team score points. Erickson took third in the mile with a time of 5:06 and went 11:37 in the 3200, good enough for another third place.
Kyler Suhoney won both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Sophomore Drew Irons tied Whitby for first in the 100 and also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.7.
Tyler Connelly took second in the 110 hurdles running an 18.2 and second in the 300 hurdles running a 46.1, Carter Gwinn got third in the 300 hurdles running a 49.2
In the throws, senior Cian Hockenberry won the discus throwing 108-8 and took second in shot put throwing 38-9.
In the javelin, Tyrone’s Carter Gwinn took second throwing 109-9 and Lucas Bonsell took third throwing 108-11
GIRLS
Coach Kanuch was also impressed with the girl’s team, who got off to a great start in their first meet.
“Sarah Chichester continues to impress in her events, as well as Nicole Ramsey. Claire Lehman also had an impressive first meet. Josie Dicken also matched her best discus throw from last year and Kylie Nelson has tossed an impressive javelin,” Kanuch said.
Chichester and Ramsey were both double winners for the Lady Eagles.
Chichester won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.8 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.7.
“I thought the meet went well and everyone competed very well,” Chichester said.
Nicole Ramsey won the long jump with a jump of 15-8 and the triple jump with a jump of 34-1 for the Lady Eagles.
Freshman Lola Woomer also had an exceptional meet, earning wins in both the 100-meter hurdles running a time of 18.6, and high jump with a 5 ‘0.
Junior Claire Lehman won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.3, and freshman Kiana Gardner received second with a time of 58.1.
Junior Alyssa Houck won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07, and sophomore Taylor Wyre received second with a time of 1:08.
