While the goal for the 2024-25 Tyrone boys basketball players and coaches is to bring home a district championship trophy, there is another important milestone on the horizon for long-time Tyrone head coach Lucas Rhoades.
Rhoades is approaching his 300th win as a head basketball coach at Tyrone.
Rhoades led the Tyrone girls program for 17 years before taking over the varsity boys’ team when long-time boys head coach George Gripp retired after the 2022-23 season.
Rhoades said he was hesitant to switch teams after a successful run with the girls, but said that the time was right.
“I felt that it was a new challenge and new opportunity,” Rhoades said.
After his first full season with the boys’ program, during which he added 17 more wins to his resume, Rhoades is inching closer to his 300th career coaching win.
Rhoades stands just 10 wins away from this coaching milestone after the season-opening 69-41 win over Penns Valley on Tuesday night.
Rhoades already has the most wins as a head coach in Tyrone basketball history and, while some older coaching records are difficult to verify, he would likely be the first Tyrone coach in any sport to reach the 300-win milestone while coaching exclusively at Tyrone.
“It would be good from a player and coaches standpoint for an achievement of this level to help future players and coaches buy into the program he has established,” senior Kendall Lehner said.
Looking forward, Rhoades should reach 300 wins by the middle of January.
But according to Rhoades, the goal for the team for the rest of the season stays the same: win the District 6 championship and make a run in the state tournament.
The boy’s next game is at home tonight vs Bishop Carroll Catholic as Rhoades will have a chance to get his second win of the season and close the gap to 300.
