The Golden Eagles went into their match at Northern Bedford on Tuesday knowing that it would be a good test against a quality opponent. Their 1-4 record at Dry Tech Duels last weekend did not satisfy the Tyrone scrappers, and the Eagles have been on a mission to prove that they are contenders this season.
Tyrone responded big, beating the previously unbeaten Panthers 41-27 in a match that featured several exciting bouts between district tournament hopefuls.
“We got our butts handed to us last weekend, but I think that experience seasoned us,” Tyrone Head Coach Quentin Wright Said. “We’ve been getting better and overall, we wrestled really well tonight.”
After Tyrone gave up two forfeits at 107 and 114 and received a forfeit at 172, the match started at 139 where Tyrone’s Caleb Whitby took on NB’s Haidyn Dively.
Dively was up 5-0 and looked like he might cruise to a win when Whitby was able to flip Dively on his back for the pin, earning the Eagles 6 points and some momentum that would help them through the rest of the match.
“Whitby was kind of getting handled a little bit at the start of his bout, but he kept fighting, and he set the tone for the entire dual meet,” Wright said.
Tyrone senior Remington Fleck followed with a dominating performance, collecting a fall in just 39 seconds.
The Panthers were able to get a decision win over Tyrone’s Steven Buck, however, Buck fought to the end, denying the Panthers the opportunity to get extra points.
At 160 Cohen Wallace bumped up to take on NB’s Nolin Snyder. Wallace was able to get a last-second takedown while tied 7-7 to get the decision.
The bout at 189 was one of the marquee matchups of the night featuring two tough wrestlers with post-season aspirations in their respective districts.
Tyrone’s Andrew Weaver battled reigning District 5 champion Eion Snyder in a match that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Weaver survived three blood timeouts from nose bleeds and scratches but still took the win 13-7 over the District 5 champ.
Tyrone’s Richard Rawling (215) pinned NB’s Collin Pepple in the second period to add six more points for the Golden Eagles.
In another big matchup, Tyrone standout senior heavyweight Braden Ewing pinned returning District 5 champion Brock Beach 34 seconds into the second period, giving Tyrone a 36-3 after eight bouts.
“Braden Ewing came up with an arm throw there that was unreal,” Wright said. “He’s a solid wrestler who is doing moves that he feels are there out on the mat, and that’s huge.”
Northern Bedford followed with two falls of their own at 121 and 127, but junior Logan Rumberger sealed the match for the Golden Eagles with a 16-0 tech fall over Paeden Logue at 133.
Both Tyrone and Northern Bedford will compete in the Panther Holiday Wrestling Classic this Friday and Saturday at Mount Aloysius College.
