Tyrone takes down MU Trojans, improves to 11-1
The Tyrone Golden Eagles had a tough match up playing the Trojans of Mount Union on Friday, January 16 at home.
Tyrone and Mount Union and not unfamiliar with each other. Both teams play with speed and intensity and the anticipation for this game was heightened as it was a sort of hardwood rematch of the District 6 football championship game.
However, both teams started out slow in the first quarter, with Tyrone holding on to a slim three point lead into half time, 26-23.
But Tyrone once again came out strong in the third quarter scoring 23 points and limited Mount Union to 14 points.
The Eagles have been especially efficient in the third quarter this season and this game was no exception. Thanks largely to a nine point scoring advantage in the third, what was a close contest in the first half ended with another comfortable victory for the Golden Eagles, as they prevailed 67-48.
Tyrone was led by Tristan Lingafelt with 22 and Pooky Soellner with 16.
“We came out in the second half and started firing,” said Lingafelt. “We played aggressive defense and played great offense. Defense is always the motor.”
Lingafelt hit two three point shots and five inside shots and went 6-9 at the line.
“We played hard and never backed down and got even more intense in the second half,”said Soellner.
Soellner hit three 3 pointers and two inside shots and went 3-4 at the line.
“At this point in the season an win is a good win,” said Tyrone Head coach George Gripp, “Mount Union’s speed was sure a big factor tonight.”
The Golden Eagles advance to 11-1 and remain on top of the Mountain League.
Tyrone next plays at home on the 19th against Westmont Hilltop and on the road versus Phillipsburg on the 21st, tip-off for both is scheduled for 7:30 pm
