Tyrone Takes 2nd at Annual Reliance Bank Holiday Tournament
Penn Cambria won the annual Reliance Bank tournament, beating Tyrone 64-55 in the championship game. Bellwood took third while Tussey Mountain finished fourth.
In Tyrone’s first game, their press strangled Tussey Mountain. Tyrone forced plenty of turnovers, especially in the first half. Tyrone outscored Tussey Mountain 50-19 in the first half.
Tyrone built a strong enough lead that their starters were essentially out of the game in the fourth quarter. Although Tyrone only scored 27 in the second half, their tremendous first half held strong.
Junior Dylan Thomas led all scorers with 23 points. Tyrone also had three other players score double digits: senior Alex Weaver and juniors Jake Meredith and Parker Mitchell.
In their second game–the championship game–Tyrone lost to Laurel Highlands competitor Penn Cambria 64-55.
It was a very good game and a very close game until the 4th quarter. in the fourth period, Penn Cambria came to life, hitting 5 triples on 5 consecutive drives. Junior Braedon O’Donnell stepped up big time in the fourth quarter, hitting 5 threes en route to a 21-3 run.
Tyrone’s defense in the fourth quarter was also lacking. that combined with Penn Cambria catching fire resulted in the loss. O’Donnell was awarded the MVP award for the tournament.
O’Donnell led all scorers with 23, while teammate Mason Ronan added 11 for the Panthers. For Tyrone, juniors Jacob Meredith and Parker Mitchell combined for 35 of Tyrone’s 55 points. Dylan Thomas added 10 points for the Golden Eagles.
The all-tournament team consisted of: Tyrone’s Jacob Meredith and Parker Mitchell, Tussey Mountain’s Ryan Leonard, Bellwood’s Jarrett Taneyhill, and Penn Cambria’s Jacob Shuagis along with MVP Braedon O’Donnell.
