The Eagle Eye sponsored its second annual food drive for the Tyrone Area Food Bank before Thanksgiving.
The students and staff at Tyrone Area Middle and High School responded by donating hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food, enough to fill a large SUV. Over $200 in cash was also donated by teachers.
The Eagle Eye food drive started last fall when the food bank was experiencing a shortage. The response was so successful that the Eagle Eye editors decided to do it again this year.
The class that collected the most food was biology teacher Beth Cannistraci’s homeroom, who earned donuts courtesy of the Eagle Eye for being the top homeroom.
Cannistraci saw one of the food drive flyers in the hall and asked her advisory students if they wanted to participate.
“When they said yes, I wanted to make sure that every student in my advisory was involved. Some students brought in food, some organized the boxes, some transported them upstairs, and some wrote thank-you notes to people who donated,” Cannistaci said.
When Cannistraci’s parents, Pete and Patty Dutrow, found out that the school was having a food drive, they wanted to get involved as well.
“Community service is important to my family, so my parents not only purchased some food, but they also got their retirement community, Graystone Community Cottages to donate food. It was a total team effort,” said Cannistraci.
Sophomore Carter Gwinn who is in Cannistraci’s advisory class believes she is a hard worker and is always going above and beyond when it comes to the community.
“Mrs. Cann worked hard to help collect all the cans with her class and really appreciates to help the community,” Gwinn said.
The Eagle Eye wants to thank Mrs. Cannistaraci, her homeroom, and all the other students and staff members who donated to support the Tyrone Area Food Bank.
