Tyrone’s 2020 graduation ceremony has been tentatively rescheduled for June 26 at Gray Memorial Field.

Earlier today the Tyrone Area School District administration released a letter to seniors, updating plans for various senior end of school year events, including prom and graduation.

“We understand that these are once-in-a-lifetime events and we will do everything in our power to make them memorable ones for you,” said Tyrone High School Principal Tom Yoder in an email to the TAHS Class of 2020.

If social gathering guidelines allow, Tyrone’s graduation ceremony has been rescheduled for June 26 at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field and the prom has been rescheduled for July 24th at the Jaffa Shrine.

In the letter, acting superintendent Leslie Estep and principal Tom Yoder acknowledged the importance of these events.

“While many high schools, colleges and universities have already made plans for a virtual ceremony, we are committed to holding a commencement ceremony for the class of 2020, that although it looks a little different than normally, is memorable and special,” said the letter signed by both Estep and Yoder.

If social gatherings are not allowed for June 26, July 17th will be used as a backup date.

If neither dates are usable, a drive-through graduation ceremony with a processional parade will be held in downtown Tyrone.

Other important activities and deadlines were covered in the letter.

On Sunday, May 17 at 2 pm the school will hold a virtual baccalaureate ceremony.

On Friday, May 22 at 7 pm there will be a virtual Senior Decision Day program.

Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29 will be senior staggered locker clean out and yearbook distribution.

Tuesday, June 4 at 7 pm will be a virtual Senior Excellence Night.

Senior checkout will occur on June 22nd and 23rd.

By these days all seniors must return school property and pay bills. At this time, seniors will receive their cap and gown and honor students will receive their medals and/or their  black and orange cords. Students in National Honor Society will receive their blue sash. Lastly, seniors may bring their Yearbooks to have friends sign.

The prom has also been rescheduled for July 24th at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona or at the high school, if social distancing regulations allow.

A survey will be sent to juniors and seniors and the final location of prom will be based on the responses.
