Tyrone police have arrested a suspect in yesterday’s hit and run involving a Tyrone Area Middle School student.
Michael Perruna, 39, of Altoona, turned himself into the Tyrone police at approximately 1:45 pm today and is currently waiting for arraignment.
The Tyrone Police Department Facebook page stated that the suspect is being charged with accidents involving death or personal injury, aggravated assault by vehicle, failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, failing to immediately notify the police department of the accident, and a duty to give information and render aid.
Perruna’s whereabouts were unknown from the time of the accident until this afternoon. Police said he may be in the Altoona or Hollidaysburg area.
The American Eagle Paper Mill and several local residents assisted law enforcement by providing surveillance footage, which led them to identify Perruna’s vehicle as the one involved in the hit and run.
The Tyrone police page said that security footage showed that the suspect’s maroon Oldsmobile van was traveling north on Pennsylvania Avenue when it struck the child on a bicycle.
Officers located the van and obtained a search warrant.
The Tyrone police also announced that the young girl involved is in stable condition and should make a full recovery.
Police ask anyone with additional information about this case to call the Tyrone Police Department at (814) 684-1365.
