Tyrone outlasts Phillipsburg 56-51

Tyrone held off Phillipsburg to capture their ninth win out of 12 games.

Junior Dylan Thomas led Tyrone to the win with 15 points. Juniors Jacob Meredith and Parker Mitchell added 12 and 14, respectively. Josiah Davis scored a game high 18 points.

For many years, Phillipsburg has been known as arguably the worst team in the Mountain League. But in this game, they played like one of the main competitors in the league.

Phillipsburg’s first quarter was textbook, and they held a 20-16 at the start of the 2nd quarter. After that, Tyrone came to life, outscoring Phillipsburg 40-31 in the remaining three quarters.

“They played really well, but we weathered the storm and came out on top,” said Junior Dylan Thomas.

Thomas, arguably Tyrone’s best shooter, started the game cold. As the game progressed, though, he heated up, and made key baskets when Tyrone needed them most.

Tyrone’s backcourt kept Phillipsburg from completing their upset though. The Meredith-Thomas-Mitchell tandem scored 41 of the team’s 56.

Seniors Michael Lewis and Alex Weaver also stepped up down low, grabbing countless rebounds.

“The bigs did a great job of keeping PO off the boards, and that lead to lot of opportunities for us to score in transition,” added Junior Jake Meredith.

Tyrone moves to 7-1 in the mountain league, tied with Clearfield for sole possession.

Looking ahead for Tyrone, They will play Central friday at home and then travel to Central Mountain on monday for a non-league game.
