Tyrone Marching Band Competition Season Opens Saturday
Tyrone goes to Mechanicsburg for the first performance of the season.
The Tyrone Area High School Marching Band competition season begins on Saturday at Mechanicsburg High School.
This year’s show is entitled “Nature’s Fury.” Tyrone Band Director David Hock and Majorette Instructor Marcia Fink are excited about this year’s show.
Tyrone will compete in group 1A of Chapter 11 this season with Tyrone, Johnstown High School, Juniata Valley High School, Elk County Catholic High School, and Somerset High School.
In the Tournament Of Bands competition grouping, there are a total of four groups. Each group is based on the band’s overall size. For group 1A, a band must have no more than 30 musicians and a maximum of 30 color guard members. For a band in group 2A, the band will have between 31-50 musicians and a maximum of 50 color guard members. For group 3A, a band will have up to 51-75 musicians and a maximum of 75 color guard members. For a group 4A band, the band will have 76 or more band members and color guard members.
The 2019-2020 competition schedule is as follows:
- Mechanicsburg High School – Saturday, September 28
- Tyrone Home Show – Saturday, October 5
- Johnstown High School – Saturday, October 12
- Region 11 Championships at IUP – Saturday, October 19
- Atlantic Coast Championships – Saturday, October 26
The band will host its annual home show on October 5. At the home show the host band is judged and scored and their score counts for the region, but the host school is not eligible to place or receive a trophy. Instead, the host band presents the awards to the other marching bands.
The drum majors this year are juniors Paige Webster and Becca White. The section leaders are senior Emily Detwiler, junior Evan Snyder, and sophomore Jacob Greene.
